Manna Gallery is excited to announce Manna at Chromata: Sharon Wilcox - Garden Scape, a pop-up exhibition within the light-filled offices of Chromata Retail directly across the street from the gallery. Wilcox, a versatile artist with a rich background in etching, watercolors, and acrylic painting, now channels her creative energy into photography. She draws inspiration from her deep appreciation for plants and gardens. Garden Scape is a testament to her love for nature, where meticulously crafted images are arranged to blur the lines between order and chaos, reality and surrealism. Each piece invites viewers to rediscover the beauty of nature, whether through the structured geometry reminiscent of formal gardens or the untamed wildness found in more natural settings.
Artist Statement:
Garden Scape: I love plants and I love gardens, it is what inspires me to create the art I make. Images have been altered and assembled to bring order to disorder and surrealism to reality. The geometry in some work plays with the tradition of formal gardens, while the chaos and wildness in other works relate to more natural settings. I hope this art will prompt you to see nature with renewed interest.
Artist Bio:
Sharon Wilcox, born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and raised in Denver, Colorado, came to California to pursue an MFA at the California College of the Arts. Following her graduation, she actively engaged in the artistic community, serving as both alumni president and a member of the board of trustees. Notably, during her high school years, Wilcox secured a four-year, tuition-paid college scholarship through a Scholastic magazine-sponsored art show, which led her to pursue a BFA at Colorado State University. Her artistic journey also took her to UC Santa Barbara to study etching and the University of Denver for watercolor painting. To fund her artistic endeavors, Wilcox taught high school art and humanities, eventually acquiring an 800-pound etching press, which she now offers for sale. Transitioning from printmaking to acrylic painting, she currently focuses on photography in her West Oakland studio, where she has dedicated the past 23 years to pursuing her art full-time.
